More Art In© is a cohort of 10 Wolverhampton and Black Country based artists aged
between 16-30, selected by open call. Working with lead artist Emily Scarrott over a
period of two months, the cohort used the gallery as a base for an art school, while
making new work in response to Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s collection.
The space that was created through the programme was generative and supportive
and has led to longer term working.
During the More Art In© programme, the cohort visited the collection stores of the
gallery to view specific artworks that inspired them. Workshops by visiting West
Midlands based artists Zie Smith, Linda Stupart and Ewan Johnston helped the cohort
to expand their material engagement, while the group supported each other’s
development during group crits. Meanwhile, the cohort thought about their
professional practice during an IKON gallery visit, as well as being part of workshops
reflecting on artist statements and future goals, and a visit from Creative Black Country.
This exhibition showcases the work made by the 10 artists in response to their
experiences here at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Sometimes inspiration is drawn
from artworks, sometimes it’s the people who work here, and other times it is the
idea of someone who has inhabited Wolverhampton in the past or will do so in the
future.
We recognise as the institution in Wolverhampton that there needs to be more
support for artists in the region. More Art In© is the start of this.
